Barrington Community Unit School District 220 runs one of Illinois's most established Chinese Immersion Programs — 50% Mandarin instruction from Kindergarten through 5th grade, continuing through 12th grade. D220 states that no prior Mandarin experience is required to join. But research — and common sense — tells a different story about what happens when children arrive already familiar with Mandarin sounds and vocabulary.
The science of language acquisition is clear: the window from birth to age 5 is when the brain is most receptive to new phonemes, tones, and language patterns. Starting Mandarin in Pre-K (ages 3–5) puts children firmly inside this critical window — well before formal school, and years before most peers encounter a second language.
Mandarin uses 4 tones to distinguish meaning. Pre-K children (ages 3–5) are still inside the critical window for tonal calibration. Starting Mandarin now — rather than waiting until 1st or 2nd grade — makes an enormous difference in how naturally children absorb the language.
Research shows bilingual children demonstrate stronger executive function, attention, and problem-solving skills — advantages that compound throughout schooling. (Bialystok et al., 2007)
Children who begin Mandarin before age 5 are significantly more likely to develop native-like pronunciation. Starting in kindergarten is still effective — starting earlier is better.
A child who already knows "Nǐ hǎo," "xièxiè," and basic classroom vocabulary arrives at D220 Chinese Immersion Kindergarten ready to participate — not overwhelmed.
Our Mandarin program integrates Chinese cultural traditions, stories, and celebrations. Children develop genuine curiosity and positive associations with the language long before formal school.
Mandarin is the world's most spoken language. D220's own program runs through 12th grade — the earlier the foundation, the greater the fluency and opportunity that follows.
A native Mandarin-speaking teacher leads our Pre-K Mandarin program daily — not a weekly special. Mandarin is woven into everyday Pre-K routines: greetings, transitions, songs, story time, cultural projects, and play. Children absorb it the same way they absorb English — through consistent, meaningful exposure from people they trust.

Mandarin immersion runs through every program level. Your child builds language naturally at every stage.

Barrington D220 states that no prior Mandarin experience is required to enter the Chinese Immersion Program. However, children who arrive at Kindergarten already familiar with Mandarin tones, basic vocabulary, and bilingual classroom routines adapt with noticeably greater ease and confidence. Early exposure during the preschool years is the single most effective preparation you can give.
Daily. A native Mandarin-speaking teacher is part of our regular classroom team, not a once-a-week visitor. Mandarin is integrated into songs, greetings, transitions, stories, and cultural activities throughout every day — the same way children absorb their first language.
